July 28 1944--Omie

July 28 Dear Jack,-     We were all sitting here after dinner, and I said I thought it would be fun  if we would write to yu kids, so here goes-but for the life of me I don't know what to say-news is so scarce.     I sure are glad you found a nice girl and are having fun.  Don seems to be drilling with rifles & he says every time they turn a corner you have to "juke" your head so you don't get hit with a rifle by the other guy.  I guess they aren't used to that sort of training.     Vince Lauer is still home and when I saw him to-day I asked him if he was ready to go back--and he said--"Not yet".  Jim Collins was rejected again by the navy.  He has sugar in his urine.  He is so disgusted as he wants in the navy.  Finny says they are betting in his office that the war in Germnay will be over in 3 months and the Jap in 6 more.  But I don't know.  I hope so anyhow.     I never see anything of the Glass...

Monday July 26 Dear Jack     Just a line to let you know that you didn't miss anything by not seeing George. ---------- At any rate he & Don are going to try and meet in Phila before Don goes and they said for you to call Don if you can make it.  Don would like to have a chance to meet you anyhow.       Well tonight is Don's last nite at home for awhile I guess. I sure hate to see him go--but I guess there isn't a thing I can do about it---eh?  ---------     I sent your underwear.  Let me know if you got it.  also write & let us know what kind of work you will be doing.  Try & pick something soft-as you've done your duty.                         Lots of love                                        Omie

Dear Jack:     You little snot.  You scared the devil out of me.  I had you in jail and everything else I could Imagine.  We didn't get the telegram until 9:30 and all the Western Union offices were closed except the one downtown so we had to go all the way to downtown Detroit to send it to you.  You don't have to tell me why you needed it ---  I know ---- You were gambling again weren't you?  Well keep five of it for your birthday gift.  I  intended to send it to you anyhow but Mom never sent me your address.  Don't believe what Mom said about us drinking.  What she doesn't know won't hurt her.     We are going down home Wed. for two weeks.  Try and get home to see us.  I  guess Omie will be worse than ever with Donnie so far away.     Did you notice I gave you a promotion when I sent the telegram?  TM2/C.  Which reminds me.  I never did bawl you out for losing your stri...

Dear Jack:          I did not get your letter untill after I had mail the bond.  I am sending you the $20.00 but I am afraid you are always going to be broke if you expect to spend that much in one evening.  Please be careful and don't do any drinking except beer.  I guess your under clothes Omie sent are at the Fleet P.O in New York.  It is hot here again today.  Think I will go on in house as I have to take this to the P.O.  Write and let me know if you get it and be good.  Love, Grandma
