May 1945 From Omie

Sunday May

Dear Jack:--
Well-we are still wondering where you are and if you are getting your mail.
The Japs are putting out peace feelers--but it falls short of unconditional surrender.  There must be something to it--but I guess its too good to hope for.  Some of our leaders think the Japs will fold up suddenly--
Russie is on Palian (spelling) Island, maybe you will run into him.
Ross Janes came home last week after 23 months over there.  He looks good and sure is glad to be back.  He will be home for 30 days and then hopes to go to China.  Rich Rea is on the Squalies sub.  They had some trouble on their first run.  Couldn't get the sub up again.  Vince & Harry are home for 30 days.
Bob cleaned the pool today and Chick cleaned the car & the porch.  Now if the weather would get warm we could sit out.  It has been awfully cold.
Would you like us to send you anything to eat?
Speaking of eating meat is getting scarcer & scarcer.  This morning's paper said the miners will refuse to work if they can't get meat.  You can't blame them either because when you work hard you need meat.
I had several letters from Don last week and he said you owed him 2 letters but that maybe you hadn't gotten his.  He also heard from Kassie but I don't know whether he answered or not.  I told him I bet him a "fiver" that he will "fall" all over again.
Chick's Dad is here for a month & we are all nearly talked to death.
I guess Finny is OK as we haven't heard anything different lately.  Alice is a very poor writer.
Chick & Harry Rea & Vince made up a party for when the war is over.  Harry is to get a case of Scotch in Scotland & Chick will rope off the street.  Sounds more like a riot to me.
Well-honey-guess this is all for now.  Keep yourself well & safe as possible & lets hope the d----Japs will see the handwriting on the wall.
                                        Love Omie
